Professor Prabhakar Rajan is a distinguished consultant urological surgeon based in London, UK, with extensive expertise in men’s health and urological cancers. He graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2000 and pursued surgical training in the East of Scotland. In 2005, he embarked on a three-year full-time PhD in prostate cancer genetics at Newcastle University, funded by a prestigious Medical Research Council Clinical Research Training Fellowship.
Following his PhD, Professor Rajan continued his urology training in the West of Scotland, focusing on complex cancer surgeries. He achieved urology specialist registration in 2014 and, as a Clinical Lecturer at the University of Glasgow, conducted post-doctoral research at the Cancer Research UK Beatson Institute. Notably, he was the first urologist in Scotland to receive the highly competitive Royal College of Surgeons of England/Cancer Research UK Clinician Scientist Fellowship in Surgery to support his prostate cancer research.
Professor Rajan further honed his skills during a clinical and research fellowship in robotic “keyhole” prostate cancer surgery at the Karolinska Institutet and University Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden. Upon returning to Glasgow in 2015, he was appointed as a Consultant Urologist specialising in laparoscopic “keyhole” kidney cancer surgery. Later that year, he joined St. Bartholomew’s Hospital (Barts Health NHS Trust) and University College London NHS Foundation Trust, where he currently specialises in robotic prostate cancer and complex advanced testicular cancer surgeries.
In addition to his clinical practice, Professor Rajan is a Professor of Urology and Robotic Surgery at Barts Cancer Institute, Queen Mary University of London. He leads an internationally renowned laboratory-based research group and conducts clinical trials to develop new treatments for prostate and testicular cancers. His research has attracted nearly £2.5 million in funding, and he has published over 80 articles, book chapters, and reviews.
Professor Rajan holds fellowships with the Royal College of Surgeons of England, the Higher Education Academy, and the Alan Turing Institute. He is a member of the National Cancer Research Institute’s Advanced Prostate Cancer and Germ Cell Tumours Research Groups. Additionally, he serves as an Associate Professor of Urology at University College London and is a member of the UCL Urology Clinical Academic Board.
Outside of his professional commitments, Professor Rajan enjoys cycling and running. He also seeks the challenge of visiting exotic, off-the-beaten-track locations, particularly where he can practise his language skills in Tamil, and to a lesser extent, Hindi and Spanish.
Professor Prabhakar Rajan has made significant contributions to urological oncology through his extensive research and numerous publications. His work primarily focuses on prostate cancer biology, alternative pre-mRNA splicing, and the development of minimally invasive surgical techniques.
