Prostate Biopsy: A Comprehensive Guide

A prostate biopsy is a medical procedure used to diagnose or rule out prostate cancer by extracting small samples of tissue from the prostate gland for examination under a microscope. At healthXY, we understand that undergoing a biopsy can be a daunting prospect, so we are here to provide you with all the necessary information, ensuring you feel informed and comfortable every step of the way.

What is a Prostate Biopsy?

A prostate biopsy involves the removal of tissue samples from the prostate gland, which is situated below the bladder and surrounds the urethra. These samples are then analysed under a microscope to check for cancer. The procedure is typically recommended when a PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) test and MRI scan suggests the possibility of prostate cancer.

Why is it Needed?

Your doctor will typically recommend a prostate biopsy for elevated PSA levels in the blood and abnormalities seen on a prostate MRI scan.

The main goal of a biopsy is to detect prostate cancer early, allowing for timely treatment and better management of the condition. Prostate biopsies are also indicated for monitoring of early stage prostate cancer

Types of Prostate Biopsy Procedures

There are different approaches to performing a prostate biopsy, and your doctor will choose the most suitable one for your situation:

  1. Transperineal Ultrasound-Guided Biopsy (TP-Biopsy): In this procedure, a small ultrasound probe is inserted into the rectum and a the biopsy needle is inserted through the skin between the back of the scrotum and the rectum.
  2. Transperineal MRI-Ultrasound Fusion Biopsy: This technique adopts the transperineal approach but combines MRI images with real-time ultrasound to provide a more precise biopsy, especially useful for locating hard-to-find lesions.

What to Expect During the Procedure

A prostate biopsy can be usually performed as an outpatient under local anaesthesia or as an inpatient under general anesthesia takes about 30 minutes. During the procedure, the doctor uses a biopsy needle to collect small samples of tissue from different areas of the prostate gland.

If performed under local anesthesia, you may feel some pressure or discomfort during the biopsy, but the procedure itself is quick. Afterward, it’s normal to experience some mild bleeding or soreness, but this usually resolves within a few days.

After the Biopsy

Following the biopsy, you may notice blood in your urine, stool, or semen, which is normal and should subside over time. It is advisable to avoid strenuous activities for a few days to allow your body to heal properly.

Results are generally available within one to two weeks. Your healthcare provider will discuss the findings with you and advise on the next steps, which may include further testing or treatment, depending on the results.

Risks and Side Effects

While a prostate biopsy is generally safe, like any medical procedure, it carries some risks. These may include:

  • Infection: In rare cases, a biopsy may lead to an infection, which might require antibiotics.
  • Bleeding: Minor bleeding is common, but heavy or prolonged bleeding should be reported to your doctor.
  • Difficulty Urinating: Some men may experience temporary difficulty urinating after the biopsy.
  • Erectile Problems:  Some men experience temporary problems with erections which usually resolves after a few weeks.

Your healthcare professional will provide guidance on how to reduce these risks and what symptoms to watch out for.
