Prostatitis

Prostatitis is a condition where the prostate, a small gland that sits below the bladder and behind the pubic bone in men. This condition can cause a range of uncomfortable symptoms like pelvic and penile pain and problems with urination. 

Prostatitis can affect men of all ages but is more common in men under 50. There are several types of prostatitis, each with different causes and symptoms.

Types of Prostatitis

  1. Chronic Prostatitis/Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome (CP/CPPS): This is the most common type of prostatitis. The cause is often unknown, and symptoms may come and go over several months.
  2. Acute Bacterial Prostatitis: This type is caused by a sudden bacterial infection and leads to severe symptoms. It needs immediate medical treatment.
  3. Chronic Bacterial Prostatitis: This type is due to recurring bacterial infections. Symptoms may be less severe than acute prostatitis but can last for a long time.
  4. Asymptomatic Inflammatory Prostatitis: This type has no noticeable symptoms and is usually found during tests for other conditions.

Symptoms of Prostatitis

The symptoms of prostatitis can vary depending on the type:

  • Pain or burning when urinating (dysuria)
  • Difficulty urinating, such as dribbling or a weak stream
  • Frequent need to urinate, especially at night (nocturia)
  • Pain in the groin, pelvic area, or lower back
  • Pain in the area between the scrotum and rectum (perineum)
  • Pain or discomfort in the penis or testicles
  • Painful ejaculation

If you have any of the following symptoms, you should see a doctor:

  • Severe pain in the pelvic area
  • Fever or chills
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Painful urination
  • Blood in the urine
